"My Spring Is Autumn"
Music & Lyrics by Dan Keusal (c) 2002 BMI

Listen to a recording of this song.

(Featured in my Autumn 2018 e-newsletter)

My spring is autumn when the world turns gold.
I'm warming up just as the days grow colder.
I'm rising as the leaves begin to fall.
The days are shorter but I'm standing taller.*
When October smells of first snow.
I'm branching out and I begin to grow.*

My day is night, I like the darker view.
My eyes adjust and midnight shines on through.
By moon and starlight is when I can see
more of the detail and the mystery.
As the world begins to wind down,
'neath evening's canopy is where I'm found.

I'm "out of season" and
I'm "in the dark."
But I'm at peace and
you can mark my words.

My life is dying to be something more.
Closing the book so I can live the story.
Opening up to what I might yet be.
And finding deep within this simple secret:
there is so much that I won't know
until I turn the corner.
Here I go.

(*the lyrics given here for the first verse are from a later revision to the song. The original lyrics for that first verse, and the ones heard on this recording, are:

My spring is autumn when the world turns gold.
I'm warming up just as the days grow colder.
I'm rising as the leaves begin to fall.
Raking ideas into piles that call me.
When October smells of first snow.
My branches bud and I begin to grow.)

I also want to acknowledge and give credit to my friend Ken Calandra, the best songwriter I've ever known, who helped me improve several lines of the lyrics.
