I've used this picture of a  Walnut tree, drawn for me by Seattle artist Dawn Moss, as the logo for my practice since 1993. I chose a tree as my logo for several reasons. Trees continue to grow until they die--something I wish both for myself and for those who are touched by my work in all its facets. Trees are rooted deep in the earth, yet reach for the sky--a soulful negotiation of the tension of opposites that, again, I would wish for both myself and those I work with. Trees are valuable, I believe, not only for their utilitarian purposes (e.g. lumber) but also for their intangibles--imagine the sound of wind rustling through leaves on a summer's evening, or a child under the shade of a tree with a favorite book. People, too, struggle with the balance between doing and being. Finally, I chose a deciduous tree to illustrate nature's ongoing cycle of life and death--new leaves in the spring, ripening in summer, falling off in autumn, bare in winter, only to see the buds of new life return each spring. May we all make our passages through the eternal cycles of life and death with the same grace!
